Reducing Barriers to Education

Salford Parent Carer Forum has worked incredibly closely with Salford's Educational Psychology Service over the years and we have done to great co-production work together. The aims of the work is to ensure that the lived experiences of families who are experiencing any barriers to education, can get information, advive and support when they need it.

"You said, we did"

There has been lots of work taken place over the years, but here are a few examples of how we have worked together to support families.

Early Identification of Needs Tool (EINT)

This tool was created with Parent Carers to help gather the views and experiences of families. We have reviewed the document on a number of occassions to ensure it still works for families and we are getting the language right.

"How can I get advise from an EP - school won't refer us"

To ensure all our families know what support is available to them and their childre, we co-host a Parent Carer Drop-in alongside the Educational Psychologists. These sessions are online each month and informal, you can share as much as you want or just hear about the support and resources available to families.

"We don't like the term EBSA"

EBSA stands for Emotional Base School Advoidance, and we agree the term doesn't reflect what our families tell us. In Salford, the team have worked on national and local projects, co-produced with Parent Carers. It was agreed that the preferred term would be Reducing Barriers to Education

"Miss school, miss out campaign"

Parent Carers told us that they didnt like the language used in this campaign, some felt judged, others felt like they were to blame. We worked with the EP service and wider teams within Salford Council to change the language used and avoid blaim on the families.
